Captain Remember Kent built a log cabin in 1797 on the outskirts of Calais, VT, which had a population of around 400 people at the time. The Kent family built a general store, post office, livery stable, shoe shop, brick kiln, sawmill, and tavern near the stagecoach stop between Montpelier VT and Montreal. This crossroads came to be known as Kents Corner.
A century and a half later, Remember’s great grandson Atwater purchased many of these properties and restored them, utilizing the fortune he had amassed making radios in Philadelphia with horns like the one used on this siren. This is an original Atwater Kent model H that was manufactured in 1925 and would have been sold then for $21.
This Atwater Kent Radio Speaker Horn was originally manufactured in Philadelphia in the 1920’s and would have had a cast iron base with a speaker driver. It has its original green label and stands approximately 19” tall with a 14.25” bell. The whole piece is 21.5” tall x 14.25” wide x 13” deep. The base is made from a reclaimed white oak beam. The base is finished with Betty’s Board Butter (beeswax & mineral oil). You may want to re-oil the base occasionally. Each Siren is signed on the bottom of the base.
If your phone has stereo options you may want to play around with mono and stereo settings to see which you prefer. Please let us know if you have a plus sized phone.
