Siren #164: Jawn
Jawn
Uniquely Philly. This Atwater Kent Model H horn stands on a base made from a floor joist from Plays & Players theater on Delancey St. i n Philadelphia, PA.
Atwater Kent may have been born in Vermont (like one half of Sawdust Siren), but he made his mark (and his millions) in Philadelphia. The Atwater Kent Manufacturing Company was the largest manufacturer of radios in the US for a time with a 15 acre site in northeast Philly.
Coincidentally, Maud Durbin Skinner (the first president of Plays & Players Theater in 1913) and her husband (the famous actor Otis Skinner) are both buried in Woodstock, VT (where Conrad went to high school).
This Model H Atwater Kent Radio Speaker Horn is approximately 18.25” tall with a 14” bell with its original green label. This particular base has lots of character with its original cracks, holes, and patina. The base is finished with Betty’s Board Butter (beeswax & mineral oil). You may wish to re-oil the base occasionally.
Vermont, welcome to Philly!
