Siren #170: Babel
Siren #170: Babel
Uniquely Philly. The Sawdust Siren duo met at the Philly Fringe Festival’s cabaret bar in 2003 – Bethany was dancing with Melanie Stewart who wanted to find Conrad to talk to him about working on a show she was planning to do the following year. Melanie somehow knew where Conrad would be hanging out… Bethany and Conrad’s first collaboration was at the 2004 Fringe with Melanie Stewart Dance Theatre/Benchtours’ production of Babel at Plays & Players theater – with Bethany as performer and Conrad as lighting designer. If not for Babel, there likely wouldn’t be a Sawdust Siren.
This Model L Atwater Kent Radio Speaker Horn was originally manufactured in Philadelphia in the 1920’s. This horn has its original brown label and stands approximately 16” tall with a 14.5” bell (whole piece is 19” tall x 10” deep). Babel’s base is made from a floor joist from Plays & Players Theater on Delancey St. in Philadelphia, PA. The joist was removed during a renovation to create the trap door on the stage in the early 90’s. This wood has a lot of character with its all its original cracks, knots, and nail holes. The base is finished with Betty’s Board Butter (beeswax & mineral oil). You may want to re-oil the base occasionally. Each Siren is signed on the bottom of the base with the siren # and name.
If your phone has stereo options you may want to play around with mono and stereo settings to see which you prefer.
